A residency that provides time and space for eco-artists to develop their practice amid the natural beauty of the Adirondacks.

Split Rock Wild Forest’s peak towers 1,000 feet above Lake Champlain in Essex County, New York. Split Rock is part of the Champlain-Adirondack Biosphere, which includes temperate coniferous and deciduous forests, as well as numerous lakes, bogs, and freshwater wetlands.

Inspired by this grand habitat, artist Jean Brennan and The Eddy have developed Split Rock Arts, a residency that provides time and space for eco-artists to develop their practice amid the natural beauty of the Adirondacks. Residents present public-facing events at local cultural venues or outdoor spaces during their stay.

COMMUNITY

In addition to supporting artists’ practice, the residency creates opportunities for visiting artists and community members to connect through public-facing events, held at local cultural venues or outdoor spaces. These happenings are designed and coordinated by the artist in collaboration with Split Rock Arts.

We are thankful to the following community partners for their support of our programming — Champlain Area Trails, Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts, Spirit Sanctuary, the Whallonsburg Grange, Elizabethtown Social Center, Lakeside School at Black Kettle Farm, and Whitcomb’s Arts.

JEAN BRENNAN

Split Rock Arts Founder

Artist and educator Jean Brennan is interested in site-specific opportunities for experiential learning and being in place—with plants, atmospheric forces, and ecological phenomena.

Recent projects include video, printed matter, installation, and writing. As a tenured adjunct Professor in the Graduate Communications Design Department at Pratt Institute, Jean has developed curricula on ecological thinking in design, including core studios “Cross-Disciplinary: Symbiotic Futures” and “Sustainability and Design.”

She finds joy in creating experiences for her students and community that foster connection with the natural world. Jean splits her time between the Hudson Valley and the Adirondacks. She is the founder of @split_rock_arts and runs a small imprint @fruit_and_rot.
